In the 24.25 season, the Theater Aachen is staging »Der Blaue Vogel / The Blue Bird« by Maurice Maeterlinck, a Belgian Nobel Prize winner and world-famous representative of Symbolism. The »rediscovery« of this iconic theatre text offers the perfect opportunity to introduce Maeterlinck's »literary heirs« to Aachen audiences and theatre-makers from Germany.
With the »Festival of Flemish Drama«, the Theater Aachen, in cooperation with Flanders Literature, presents three contemporary plays from Flanders (the reading of »Mater« by Femke Van der Steen is also supported by deAuteurs):
»Alleman / Jedermann« by Freek Mariën (German von Christine Bais):
Imagine: your neighbour suddenly discovers a spring on his property. He fills bottles with the water and sticks a price tag on them. And after a while, not a single drop of water comes out of your tap. You are thirsty – while he splashes with rubber ducks in his bathtub. Alleman playfully and absurdly challenges the rules of our coexistences.
»Monding / Mündung« by Anna Carlier (German by Christine Bais):
In »Mündung«, three wild salmon begin the journey of their lives: across the open sea, back to the place where they were born, covering thousands of kilometres full of danger. Reproduction there is their last and only goal. A beastly piece about human existence, being tired and the desire to let go, about senseless determination and determined senselessness.
»Mater« von Femke Van der Steen (German by Lisa Mensing):
In five stories, eight women navigate through history and the present while imagining an alternative future. They explore both their own fears and those of society, fears of the feminine, the ‘natural’ and the chaotic.
Tip: On Friday 14 February at 7pm in the Spiegelfoyer, theatre-makers from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands will be introducing the topic and discussing questions about cross-border work, differences and similarities between theatre cultures in all three countries as part of our »Stadtgespräch: Grenzgänge« (Talk of the Town: Crossing Borders) on the topic of culture-making in the border triangle. Admission is free!
Offer: One reading is not enough for you? Book a combination ticket and experience all three readings (for only €18) or all three readings and the presentation of our production of »Der blaue Vogel« on 15 February at 8 p.m. (for a fabulous €31).
